What is Doxycycline

Doxycycline is one of the first antibacterial drugs from the tetracycline group. At one time, its use was supplanted by new and then very effective drugs, to which bacteria soon became resistant. And the long-forgotten Doxycycline again became actively used. The list of diseases for the treatment of this drug is wide.

What does doxycycline treat

In the Doxycycline is the same active ingredient. The drug belongs to tetracyclines, has a wide spectrum of activity. Doxycycline acts bactericidal – leads to the death of microbial cells. The drug penetrates into the cells and acts on pathogens here. Doxycycline violates the synthesis of protein microbes, and this leads to their death. It is active against the following microorganisms:

  • causative agents of purulent infectious diseases – golden and epidermal staphylococcus, streptococcus;
  • pathogens of intestinal infections – clostridia, Listeria, Klebsiela, E. coli, enterobacter, salmonella, Yersinia, Vibrio cholerae;
  • genital infections – gonococcus, pale treponema (causes syphilis), chlamydia, mycoplasma, ureaplasma.

In addition, the drug acts on the causative agents of brucellosis, ornithosis, tularemia, anthrax, psittacosis, legionellosis.

Entering the systemic circulation, Doxycycline binds predominantly to lipids (fats). Therefore, there is a significant accumulation of the drug in the liver, kidneys, bile, pleural fluid, as well as in the sinuses, bones and teeth. Doxycycline penetrates the placenta and passes into breast milk, therefore its use during pregnancy and lactation is prohibited.

How to take doxycycline

The drug is available in ampoules for preparing a solution for intramuscular and intravenous administration, but the most popular form of use is oral capsules. Intravenous and intramuscular administration is indicated only in cases of severe purulent-inflammatory diseases. For this, the contents of the ampoule are dissolved in sterile isotonic solution.

Doxycycline dose

The dosage of the doxycycline tablets can be 50, 100, and 200 mg of the active ingredient, and the ampoule should be 100 or 200 mg each. The standard treatment regimens are as follows:

  • 100 mg every 12 hours – for 7-14 days;
  • 200 mg every 24 hours for 7-14 days;
  • 300 mg every 24 hours for ten days (only for the treatment of syphilis).

For the prevention of malaria and treatment of rosacea, acne, the drug is used for a long time, with courses of a month or more.

Contraindication of doxycycline

  • Hypersensitivity to doxycycline and tetracyclines;
  • Pregnancy (second half);
  • Breastfeeding (for the period of treatment should refrain from breastfeeding);
  • Children’s age up to 9 years (period of development of teeth);
  • Porphyria;
  • Severe liver failure;
  • Leukopenia.

Special instructions and precautionary measures:
The use of doxycycline during the formation of teeth can cause an irreversible change in their color.
Treatment of infections caused by streptococci and staphylococci, Escherichia, Shigella, akinetobacter, is possible only after determining the sensitivity of microorganisms to doxycycline.
For the prevention of ulceration of the esophagus should be taken with a large amount of fluid.
During treatment and for 4-5 days after it, direct exposure to sunlight or UV rays is contraindicated (photosensitization).
With prolonged use should regularly monitor the cellular composition of peripheral blood, carry out functional liver function tests, determine the nitrogen and urea in the serum.
Perhaps a false increase in the level of catecholamines in the urine when they are detected by the fluorescence method.
In the study of biopsy of the thyroid gland in patients who received doxycycline for a long time, the possibility of dark brown staining of tissue in microscopic preparations should be taken into account.

Doxycycline overdose

Symptoms: With the introduction of high doses, especially in patients with impaired liver function, neurotoxic reactions may appear: dizziness, nausea, vomiting, seizures, impairment of consciousness due to increased intracranial pressure.
Treatment: drug withdrawal, gastric lavage with activated charcoal, symptomatic therapy, oral antacids and magnesium sulfate are prescribed to prevent doxycycline absorption. There is no specific antidote. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are ineffective.

Doxycycline side effects exhaustion

Possible: nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, allergic reactions in the form of edema, itching, skin rash (syrup may contain sulfites that can cause allergic reactions up to anaphylaxis and severe asthma attacks), dizziness, sweating.
Rarely: angioedema, photosensitivity, eosinophilia.

Doxycycline storage

Store in a dry, dark place at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C.
