What is Augmentin

Augmentin is a drug that is widely used in the treatment of infectious diseases in children and adults. Augmentin is a combination drug, that is, consists of two main medicinal substances: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It destroys bacteria, disrupting the synthesis of their cell wall. Clavulanic acid resists bacterial enzymes that destroy amoxicillin and thereby increases the effectiveness of treatment.

Used to treat

Augmentin is widely used in the practice of doctors of many specialties. This drug is effective for the following infections, provided that the pathogens of these diseases are sensitive to augmentin:

  • infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract: acute bronchitis, tracheitis, tracheobronchitis, pneumonia, lung abscess, pleural empyema;
  • infections of upper respiratory tract: sinusitis, tonsillitis, otitis;
  • urinary tract infections: cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, gonorrhea; women also have cervicitis (inflammation of the cervical canal), salpingitis (infection of the fallopian tubes), salpingo-oophoritis (infection of
  • the fallopian tubes and ovaries), endometritis (inflammation of the uterine lining), bacterial vaginitis, postpartum sepsis, infectious complications after abortion;
  • biliary tract infections: cholangitis (inflammation of the bile ducts), cholecystitis;
  • intestinal infections: dysentery, salmonellosis;
  • infections of the skin and soft tissues: erysipelas (skin lesions with streptococcus), wound phlegmon (purulent destruction of tissues), abscess, secondarily infected dermatosis;
  • bone infections: osteomyelitis (purulent destruction of bone tissue).
  • endocarditis – an infection of the inner lining of the heart;
  • meningitis – inflammation of the meninges;
  • prevention of infectious complications in surgery.

Augmentin’s widespread use is due to its distribution in all tissues of the body, after the drug enters the blood. Isolation of the drug is carried out by the kidneys, therefore, in case of renal insufficiency, the dosages of augmentin are selected individually.

Augmentin vs Amoxicillin

Augmentin, as mentioned above, contains besides amoxicillin, clavulanic acid. This is a substance that helps amoxicillin show its effect. The fact is that microorganisms that infect our bodies never stand still in development. They are constantly improving, thus acquiring resistance to antibiotics already known to them. Therefore, even with a lot of antibiotics in stock, we sometimes cannot cure some infections, since resistance to many of the antibiotics can develop. Microbes have a large stock of various ways to protect against our drugs. One such method is the production by bacteria of substances that break down molecules in the structure of a drug and make it inactive. So, some microorganisms produce β-lactamase – a substance that destroys amoxicillin molecule and completely suppresses its activity. Clavulanic acid is a substance that inactivates β-lactamase itself. As part of augmentin, it protects amoxicillin from β-lactamase, thus making even bacteria resistant to other antibiotics sensitive to augmentin treatment.

Augmentin pediatric dose

Augmentin is available in the form of tablets, dry powder for preparing syrup and sterile powder for preparing injections. Injections are administered intravenously and never injected intramuscularly. Tablets and syrup are usually taken at the beginning of the meal. The dosage of the drug and the method of administration are individual for each patient, depending on the age, body weight, severity and localization of the infectious process, the presence of comorbidities.

Adults and children over 12 years old with a moderate severity of the infectious process are prescribed one tablet of 375 mg three times a day, and in severe cases they give a tablet of 675 mg per dose 3 times a day. If necessary, intravenous administration, the maximum single dose delivers 1.2 g, injections are made every 6-8 hours. The maximum daily dose for intravenous administration is 7.2 g.

Augmentin dosage for children

Children under 12 years old Augmentin is prescribed in the form of syrup. The powder is diluted with boiled water. A single dose depends on age and is 250 mg for children of 7–12 years old, 125 mg from 2 to 7 years old, and 125.5 mg from 9 months to 2 years. The established doses also give 3 times a day. When administered intravenously to children, doses are calculated individually depending on body weight.
In the presence of renal failure, the dose of Augmentin is reduced and injected with large intervals.

Augmentin breastfeeding

Augmentin penetrates the placental barrier and enters the fetal blood, but its negative effects on the fetus were not found. When prescribing a drug to pregnant women, it is necessary to evaluate the benefit to the mother and the possible risk to the fetus.

Augmentin is excreted in breast milk, and therefore there is a risk of sensitization and allergization (hypersensitivity of the child). In the rest, the preparation practically does not affect the children’s organism.

Augmentin side effects

Appear rarely, often reversible. When taking Augmentina may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pain in the stomach. It is extremely rare in older people develop hepatitis and jaundice due to stagnation of bile in the bile ducts. These changes are reversible and stop after drug withdrawal. Allergic reactions are also possible: urticaria, angioedema, rarely anaphylactic shock. Cases of the development of candidiasis – a fungal infection of the mucous membranes and dysbacteriosis are described. Sometimes it may cause headache, dizziness.
